These days, there are partylist organizations that have been organized, funded, and are being run by big businessmen, the political elite, religious organizations and others. They do this for more or less the same reason that a big businessman, political elite or religious leader runs for a local position -- to protect and promote their personal interests.

This leads to the question, "Has the partylist system become BIG BUSINESS?"

If at all Ms. Glenda Gloria is interested in doing some justice, shouldn't she come up with a list of partylist organizations which name the people behind them?

Senator Juan Ponce Enrile to Senator Manny Villar: THE PRESIDENCY, THE FILIPINO PEOPLE, THE PHILIPPINES ARE NOT FOR SALE
Sen. Villar may have succeeded to a large extent in deploying the huge fortune he acquired, perhaps some by honest means, but definitely, a large part, by the immoral use of his political position, power and clout to advance his own business interests as borne out by the evidence in Senate Ethics case and, much earlier, by the shenanigans exposed on the Floor of the Lower House by Sen. Joker Arroyo,

But on May 10, he must be taught a hard and painful lesson by no less than the electorate. He must be unmasked and rejected as a fake leader in order for the nation to redeem itself. We must clearly send the strongest message to Senator Manuel “Manny” B. Villar, as Senator Richard J. Gordon has said, that THE PRESIDENCY OF THIS NATION, THE FILIPINO PEOPLE, AND THE PHILIPPINES ARE NOT FOR SALE.

Nagsalita na ako sa daang-daang mga forums ipinapaliwanag itong C-5 issue. Linagay ko ito sa website. We printed tens of thousands of pamphlets explaining the C-5 controversy. Nag-advertise kami sa aking hangarin na maipaliwanag sa tao ito diretso. Dinala ko ang mga journalists dito sa C-5, sa dalawang kalye doon.
Certainly, the hoards of middlemen and brokers of industry of "winning at all costs" certainly don't want automated elections to succeed because there is no way to manipulate the results. You can manipulate the voters, for sure, but that would be a costlier enterprise than just waiting for the ballots to arrive at the canvassing centers and doing their magic in the comfort of a hotel. Money won't change hands for an assured win at the polls, or at least, not as much.

Juan Ponce Enrile talks about Senator Manny Villar's alleged bribery try to drop the C-5 ethics complaint:

He asked for a lunch with me, and I cancelled the lunch. And without an announcement, he came to the office and I talked to him. And he was pleading with me to help him, but I told him, "Manny," I said, I am the chairman of the committee, I cannot take sides. I'll have to preside over the hearing of your case, and I would suggest that you assign some of your lawyers to participate so that they can object to the presentation of evidence, if there are any objectionable evidence presented against you. And at the same time, you assemble your own evidence and present it to us in the committee so that we can take into account your evidence, when we prepare the report. Well, somehow I noticed that there was an effort to really convince me to go soft on him.

In a privilege speech delivered in 1998 as a congressman, Joker Arroyo already raised serious issues against then Speaker Manny Villar.

This is an old privilege speech delivered by then Congressman Joker Arroyo, bringing to light issues against then Congressman Manny Villar.
Malayang Halalan re-posts this privilege speech in its entirety here, for all to consider.
